Lugworm from Orkney, Great Sea Fishing Bait

I dream of using the good old lugworm again but in Orkney although there are plenty of casts the worms are so deep that unless you use a JCB you have no chance of gathering enough for a decent days fishing, Any ideas?

Can any of you help Michael with the above question. I have never been to the location to dig bait so I cannot really help or advise on this question. Please comment on this sea fishing question if you can help out.

    What about using a bait pump?
    Much less effort and you can get maybe 3 feet deep.
    I am planning a trip to Orkney this winter, where have you seen the casts? I have always fished with Rag & Sandeel up there.

    We lived on the isle of lewis for 13 years before moving to cumbria and never used Lug we usually fished with mac or local shell fish or when the sandeel’s were in we fished with those.
    You could always try using artificial lugs like the ones from gulp or send for some dried lug,
    Personally if rag or sandeel are there I would use that.
    As for a bait pump, I bought a tkr one for use here in Cumbria and would sell it tomorrow as I can’t use it

    Hello,
    I was out digging lugworm recently, I found that they weren’t that deep, just approached a nice chunky cast with caution so as not to alert the worm and dug down about a fork’s depth (10″). Got about 25-35 Lugs in 30 minutes with very little effort, the quicker you are at getting that first forkfull out, the more likely you are to catch the bleeder. I haven’t fished or dug for Lug in over 15 years, never had much luck before but I found it easy and rewarding. Good luck.
